-----------------------------------------------

John Wumkes was born on the George Wells farm August 10, 1870, and died at Davis, South Dakota Oct. 2, 1897 of abdominal typhoid.

Mr. Wumkes was stricken down in his strong young manhood. He was well known in this vicinity, having recently left for South Dakota. The bereaved wife is a daughter of R. Sterenberg. He was a prime favorite with his companions and a member of the Reform church.

The deceased was a member of the Modern Woodman of America and when the remains arrived on Monday night's train, they were cared for by a delegation from that lodge at this place, who also assisted at the funeral services. At one o'clock friends and relatives of deceased assembled at the home of Mr. R. Sterenberg, where Rev. Saalbarn and Rev. Jordan of this place conducted appropriate services. The remains were laid to rest at Rose Hill cemetery. The sympathy of many friends is extended the stricken wife with her fatherless little child. May she find comfort.
