Klaus Groninga, 81, Lifelong Resident Of Community, Dies
Klaus Groninga, 81, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away at his home Saturday, January 13. Services were held at the Westfriesland Presbyterian Church Tuesday, January 16 and interment was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Norman Flink was the officiating pastor.
Klaus George Groninga, son of Yoest and Mary Groninga, was born in Butler county November 4, 1880. He grew up in this community and on February 27, 1906 he was united in marriage to Reka Hayenga. Four sons were born to them, two of whom preceded their father in death.
The Groningas farmed in Grundy county one year after their marriage, and then moved to their present place, two miles east of Ackley on Highway 20.
In July, 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Groninga became members of the Westfriesland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving Mr. Groninga are his wife; two sons, Vernon, of Ackley, and Vincent, who lives at the family home; three grandchildren, Kenneth, Sheryl and Steven; two sisters, Mrs. Will VanGerpen and Mrs. Raymond Harken, both of Aplington. His sons Kenneth and Cecil preceded him in death, as did two sisters, Mrs. Kate Dekker and Mrs. Jessie Abkes, and one brother, George.
