Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, July 18th, at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Parkersburg, with Rev. W. Gies of Waverly officiating. Interment was made in Salem Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Engelkes Funeral Home of Parkersburg.
Mrs. Jessie Aswegen, daughter of Fred and Hemkea Hempen Marks, was born on a farm south of Stout, Iowa on April 21, 1894. She received her education in the Grundy County school system. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed at Salem Lutheran where she continued to be a member all of her life. Following her marriage on March 2, 1914 with John L. Aswegen, the family farmed for 6 years north of Fern and then moved to the present Aswegen farm southwest of New Hartford. Mr. Aswegen died in 1947 and Jessie continued to reside at the family home until 11 months ago when she became a resident of Windsor Care Center in Cedar Falls and later at Maple Manor at Aplington.
She had been hospitalized for the past 4 weeks at Allen Memorial Hospital following a stroke and died there at noon on Sunday, July 15 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 24 days.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a daughter and 1 brother, Ubbe Marks. Surviving are 1 son, Herman of Parkersburg, 4 daughters, Carrie (Mrs. Harry Vaughn) of Janesville; Lucille (Mrs. Leslie Carstensen) of Waterloo; Frieda (Mrs. D. E. Bramblett) of Jesup and Edna (Mrs. Robert Cowell) of Central City, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Herbert Fritschen of Cedar Rapids and many other relatives.
