Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church for Charley Van Tiger, 88, who died at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital due to complications of age.

Rev. Jerry Van Curler officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were William Hartman, Calvin Kruse, Lester Harken, John Niehaus, Art Meester and Kenneth Walters.

Mr. Van Tiger had been a patient at the county hospital for two months.

He was born October 2, 1883, at rural New Boston, Mo., the son of Harmon and Elizabeth Overstreet Van Tiger.

At the age of seven he moved with his parents to Marceline, Mo., where he attended rural school and high school. When he was 17 he came to Hardin county where he worked on various farms.

On December 13, 1904, he was united in marriage to Sarah Luitjens at the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church parsonage. The couple farmed for eight years in Shiloh township, and then moved to a farm in Colfax township where they remained until 1946. They then moved to Grundy Center, where he resided at the time of his death.

Mrs. Van Tiger passed away on April 28.

He is survived by two sons, Henry of Ackley and Harold of Anaheim, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Walter (Susanna) Baumgartner of San Marino, Calif.; one brother, Frank, of Marceline, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Richardson of New Boston, Mo.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, one daughter, three sisters and two brothers.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Van Tiger was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church for 58 years.
