Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bethany Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Harmke Van Deest, 87, who died last Friday evening at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since last October 26.

Rev. A. J. Straatmeyer officiated the service. Burial was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Mrs. Van Deest was born February 7, 1878, at Leer, Ostfriesland, Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Saathoff.

She came to Grundy county with her parents when she was three years old and lived on a farm in Lincoln township. She was united in marriage to Behrend Van Deest on March 14, 1901. The couple farmed in Colfax township for a number of years, then moved to a farm north of Grundy Center in 1948.

Mr. Van Deest passed away May 3, 1964.

The deceased was a member of the Colfax Center church for many years, then transferred her membership to the Bethany church in 1953.

Survivors include five sons, Adolph, John, William and Herbert, all of Grundy Center, and Benjamin B., Holland; three daughters, Gepka, Mrs. Henry Graves of Dike, Jennie, Mrs. Henry J. Meester, Grundy Center, and Greta, Mrs. Edward Flater, Holland.

Also surviving are 37 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Rev. John Saathoff, Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, one brother and one sister in infancy, two sons and an infant daughter.
