Hazel Esther Beck, 98, of Davenport and formerly of Grundy County, died Monday, Dec. 26, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Graveside services were held Thursday at Melrose Cemetery, Eldora, Runge Mortuary, Davenport, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born Aug. 17, 1896, in rural Grundy County to Samuel Henry and Pauline Julion Callaway. She married Arthur Beck Dec. 15, 1921, in Eldora. She worked as a cook and house mother at Simpson College, Indianola, and Iowa State University. She later worked for J. C. Penney in Indianola for 20 years, retiring in 1963.

She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, the Methodist Church, president of the Long Beach, Calif., Republican Club, Senior Citizens Center officer and Navy Mothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Clara (Mrs. Forrest "Mort") Mortiboy of Davenport; three step-grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1937; a sister; and two brothers.
