DeLilah P. Whitmire, 84, of Conrad, formerly of Wellsburg, went home to her Lord on Saturday, June 12th, 2010 at the Conrad Nursing Center in Conrad, IA. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 16th, 2010, 10:00 am at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg with Pastor Gary Burkhalter officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 15th from 5 to 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow funeral services at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the American Diabetes Association, or to the National Kidney Foundation.

DeLilah Pearl Bessman was born on March 26, 1926 in Alden, Iowa, the daughter of George and Marie (Willig) Bessman. DeLilah was united in marriage to Merle R. Whitmire on November 25, 1946 at St. Peter’s Church of Christ in rural Wellsburg. To this union they were blessed with 5 children; Bonnie (Tom) Horobik of Benkelman, NE, Robert (Darla) Whitmire of Conrad, Beverly (Mark) Hockert of Bettendorf, Rebecca (Doug) Kinsinger of Topeka, KS and Rodney (JoAnn) Whitmire of Dallas Center; 15 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 9 step-great grandchildren.

DeLilah was a loving wife, devoted mother and proud grandmother. While raising her family, she was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Wellsburg Music Mothers.

She is survived by her husband Merle, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers Zeal, Brice and Donnie Bessman; sisters Minnie Eddy, Eileen Schultz and Lois Moore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Ruth Roegner; daughter-in-law Kim Whitmire; brothers-in-law Jack Eddy, Don Roegner and Bill Schultz; sisters-in-law Catherine and Mavis J. Whitmire.
