Dorothy Mae was born on March 13, 1921, near Ackley, Iowa. She and her sisters were raised by Edward and Senith Coordes on a farm southeast of Ackley.
Dorothy married the love of her life, Kenneth Thompson, on November 22, 1939. Together they would raise four cherished children. Giving of herself was Dorothy's true gift to those around her. As a member of Wellsburg St. Peter's United Church of Christ, she served teaching children classes and, together with Kenny, enjoyed working with the youth group. She volunteered with her sister at the Presbyterian Village, and as 4H leader and fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club in Mesa, Arizona, where she and Kenny spent many winters. Her home reflected Dorothy's many talents including decorating, cooking/baking, gardening, sewing and crafts. Friends and family who visited Dorothy at her home couldn't leave without something in their hands, whether it was a sweet treat or a thoughtful gift. Our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and dear friend will be remembered with love and will be enormously missed.
She is survived by her loving husband, Kenny Thompson of Ackley; her sister, Mildred Thompson of Sacramento, California; and her children, Duane (Jewel) of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Patricia of Anchorage, Alaska; Gary of Wasilla, Alaska; and Royce (Donna) of Ackley. Dorothy's grandchildren will miss the woman who always made them feel special. These include Beth Kurth, Ruth Kurth, Bobbie Jean Molle, Dominique Kurth, Tammy Huff, Mike Thompson, Nick Thompson, Hilary Thompson and Drew Thompson. Also surviving Dorothy are her loving great-grandchildren, Carrie and Josh Huff; Dustin, Bryant, and Candace Molle; Kurt, Kelley and Audrey Turner; and Nicole Thompson.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Sailer and Lucille Hartema, and an infant brother, Lewis Coordes.
A celebration of Dorothy's life took place on April 29th at the United Methodist Church in Ackley.
