Janice Arlene Diekman, age 70, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Nettie (Riekena) Okones on October 24, 1938, Wellsburg, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from the Wellsburg High School in 1956.

On February 8, 1957, Janice was united in marriage with Wayne Diekman at her parent’s home in Wellsburg, Iowa. Following marriage they made their home and remained living in Aplington. First and foremost to her was being a loving wife and mother. Janice worked and helped in the family grocery business for many years. After the store was sold and her children were grown Janice worked at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington.

Janice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she took part in the women’s fellowship and the church choir. She also enjoyed being a part of the ladies bridge club and taking their yearly trips together. Through the years she enjoyed quilting, reading, gardening and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren and she especially loved taking annual family fishing trips with them.

Janice died Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Stanley Okones; and one sister, Rhea Nederhoff.

Janice is survived by her husband of 52 years, Wayne Diekman, Aplington, IA; three sons, Scott Diekman, Aplington, IA, Robert (Ranae) Diekman, Bird Island, MN and Jason (Julie) Diekman, East Moline, IL; one daughter, Jonie (Alan) Tenney, Aplington, IA; and eight grandchildren, Andrew, Kayla and Colin Tenney, Nicole (David) Wasierski, Samantha Diekman, Drew Diekman, Grant Diekman and Ellie Diekman.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Family of Janice Diekman.
