Laura Byl, age 89, of Aplington, Iowa, was born November 3, 1919, to John and Hattie (Vanderwerf) Boelman on a farm near Ackley, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church rural Wellsburg, Iowa, now St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.

On June 25, 1941, Laura was united in marriage with Francis Byl at a family home. They made their home and farmed in Grundy County, Iowa most of their married life. In 1969 they moved to Aplington. Through the years Laura did cleaning and housekeeping; and later she worked part-time at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley as a housekeeper.

Laura was a life-long member of St. Peter’s and a long time member of the Gleaners, a church women’s group. Her pastime was crocheting for family and friends who treasure her work. She always enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family.

Laura died Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Byl on February 8, 1989, her parents, two brothers, George and Casjen Boelman, two sons-in-law, Gary Proffitt and Gene Gladin, and one daughter-in-law, Carol Byl.

Laura is survived by three sons, Virgil (Karol) Byl of Wellsburg, Iowa, Vern (Jean) Byl of Waverly, Iowa, and Roger (Karla) Byl of Clinton, Iowa; one daughter, Julie Gladin of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, David (fiancée, Lori) Byl, Diane (Joseph) Wells, Michael (Darcy) Byl, Jeffrey (Kerri) Byl, Renee (Eric) Barnwell, Jason (Beverly) Gladin, Scott (Melody) Byl, Kevin Byl and Jeremy Byl; two step-grandchildren, Andrea (Mark) Erickson and Whitney (Dale) Laurion; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Sophia Hawkins of Aplington, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Henrietta Byl of Grundy Center, Iowa and Genevieve Boelman of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ with burial in the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery both rural Wellsburg.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Family of Laura Byl.
