George E. Canfield, 82, Dies Saturday In County Hospital

George E. Canfield, 82, who operated a shoe repair shop at Grundy Center for many years, died Saturday (18 March 1967) afternoon at Grundy County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Ferree Funeral Home here, followed by burial in the Morrison cemetery.

Casket bearers were Kenneth, Dale, Ted and Tim Canfield, and Keith and Bruce Bailey.

George Earl Canfield was born March 25, 1884, in Black Hawk county, the son of Manly G. and Elizabeth Canfield. He was united in marriage to LaVerna Thomas on October 7, 1914, in Grundy Center. She died in June, 1944.

Mr. Canfield was a member of the Grundy Center fire department for 40 years, and was fire chief for 20 years. He retired form the department in 1950. He also was a former member of the Grundy Center town council.

He operated a shoe repair and harness shop in downtown Grundy Center for nearly a half century, before ill health forced him to retire about two years ago.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Opal Schwenn of Marshalltown, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters and two brothers.
