Dena Heikens, 91, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Hubbard Care Center, Hubbard, Iowa, of natural causes.

Dena was born July 20, 1911, in Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Jennie (Heronimus) Hoodjer. She attended rural country school in Grundy County as a youngster. On August 22, 1929, Dena was united in marriage to Harry Heikens at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived on a farm southwest of Wellsburg for many years until 1971, when they retired and made Wellsburg their home. Dena was a homemaker and farmwife for most of her life. In later years, she enjoyed cooking in various restaurants in the area. Together, Dena and Harry enjoyed forty-seven years of marriage together. Harry died on August 21, 1976.

Dena liked to play cards and bingo. She loved her grandchildren. Dena was a member of the United Reformed Church in Wellsburg.

Survivors include four sons Harlan Heikens and his wife Pearl of Franklin, Virginia; Don Heikens and his wife Norma of Wellsburg, Iowa; Marvin Heikens and his wife Jean of Hubbard, Iowa; Jim Heikens and his wife Linda of Knoxville, Iowa; one daughter Bev Hatcher and her husband Terry of Clemons, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; four step great-great grandchildren; one brother John Hoodjer and his wife Gertrude of Wellsburg, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry in 1976; five sisters Jennie Bergman, Effie Buskohl, Katie Harms, Tena Everts, and Grace Renken; and one infant great-grandchild.
