Elmer Fritzel, 76, of Wellsburg, passed away Monday, July 8, 1996, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes.

Born May 2, 1920, in Grundy County, Iowa, Elmer was the son of August and Elizabeth (Knock) Fritzel. He was united in marriage to Marjory Stark on April 3, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Elmer owned and operated Feeder's Supply in Wellsburg, farmed, and was later employed by Mid-Equipment Corporation in Grundy Center. For the last 15 years he worked at T. J.'s Town and Country Market.

He was a veteran of World War II, and earned a Purple Heart Medal, three Bronze Star Medals, a Good Conduct Ribbon, and an EAME Ribbon. He was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church and of the Wellsburg American Legion Post #213.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Marjory; one daughter, Mary Block and her husband Chuck of Lake City; one sister, Esther Geerdes and husband Harold of Edinburg, TX; 2 granddaughters; and 2 step-sisters, Lois Stephens of Reinbeck, and Alvena Shupek of San Bernardino, CA.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 11, 1996, at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial following at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. The Reverend Douglas Holmes officiated the service. Full Military Graveside Rites were conducted at the cemetery by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post 91 and the American Legion Post #213.

Pallbearers were Elwood Doyen, Randy Groninga, Lowell Riekena, John Ringena, Elmer Ruter, and Doug Tjaden. Honorary pallbearers were Kermit Smith, Guy Schroeder, Roscoe Dawson, Lewis Moreland, Buster Starr, and Kenneth Woodstrom.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the professional arrangements.
