Ralph A. Huisman, 85, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, Iowa. Private family funeral services will be held, with Pastor Betsy Piette, officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg, Iowa, with full military rites, provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American Legion Post No. 213. Public Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2008, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg, with the family present to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Ralph Arlo Huisman was born June 4, 1922, in Wellsburg, Iowa, the son of Meint and Ellen (Lamb) Huisman. He attended school in Wellsburg, and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1940. In 1943, Ralph was called to serve in the United States Army during World War II, serving until he was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 14, 1951, Ralph was united in marriage to Virginia Pace in Marshalltown, Iowa. After their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg. Ralph owned and operated Huisman Brothers Tiling with his brother Lester "Speck" Huisman until 1982. Ralph's son Toby joined his dad in the family business and the business became Huisman Farm Tiling. Ralph worked in his family business for over fifty-five years.
Ralph loved to coon hunt as well as hunting for fox, bears and coyotes. He loved working with his coon dogs and in 1996 he won the World Hunt for coon dog hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Huisman of Wellsburg, Iowa; one son, Toby Huisman and Rhonda Nicholas of Wellsburg, Iowa; one step-son, Larry Ward and his wife Cheryl of Plano, Illinois; one step-daughter, Ginny Oddo and her husband Nick of Highland Ranch, Colorado; one grandson, Tyler Huisman of Wellsburg, Iowa; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Mayo "Mike" Huisman and his wife Shirley of Rapid City, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law, Helen Huisman of Holland, Iowa; Mildred Huisman of Sarasota, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Wanda Hoekstra; and four brothers, Herbert, Gene, Eldon, and Lester "Speck" Huisman.
