Harold J. O'Kones, 91, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital-Long Term Care Unit, of natural causes. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Wellsburg Reformed Church, in Wellsburg, Iowa, with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial will follow at Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, December 10, 2004, at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Visitation will also be Saturday morning from 8:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., at the funeral home. The family will be present on Friday evening to greet friends. A memorial fund has been established.

Harold was born October 3, 1913, the son of John Cornealus and Antje (Nederhoff) O'Kones, on a farm in Melrose Township. He received his elementary education in Melrose Township No. 1 and attended Wellsburg High School graduating in 1931. Later he attended UNI, formerly Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, until he was called home due to his father's illness. He assisted his parents in farming until becoming engaged in farming on his own behalf. On December 25, 1943, Harold was united in marriage to Annette E. Knock at her parent's home. They lived on the same farm until retiring in 1978, when they moved to Wellsburg. Harold and Annette celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on December 25, 2003.

He served as an office bearer, Sunday School Teacher, and for many years, he taught an adult Bible Study while he was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. Later he became a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Harold was a member of the board of directors for the Wellsburg Community School from the years of 1952 through 1962. In this period district reorganization was completed and two building programs provided completely new education facilities. Harold enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He loved to read.

He is survived by his wife Annette O'Kones of Wellsburg, Iowa; two sons Ronald O'Kones and his wife Barbara of West Union, Iowa; Roger O'Kones of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter Joan O'Kones of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandsons Matthew O'Kones of West Union, Iowa; Jared O'Kones of Gilbert, Arizona; and Nathan O'Kones of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother in infancy; and three sisters- Cornealja in infancy, Anna- Mrs. Jacobus Borchers, and Tena- Mrs. Albert Van Deest.
