PARKERSBURG—Marlyn Cecil Vanderwerf, 76, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of a cancer illness. Funeral service were held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, with military rites provided by Parkersburg American Legion Post No. 285.

Marlyn was born Aug. 10, 1928, the son of Peter and Grace (Behrends) Vanderwerf on a farm in Grundy County near Wellsburg. He received his education in a Grundy County country school. Marlyn was united in marriage with Gertie Evers on Nov. 18, 1949, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. The couple made their home in Parkersburg and in 1950, they moved into their current home. Shortly after their marriage, he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 4, 1952, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1954. He served in Korea and was stationed in Pittsburgh, Pa., and later in Texas. Marlyn worked at Clay Equipment Company as a shear operator for 41 years and retired in August 1991 at the age of 62. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council, was Sunday school superintendent, sang in the church choir and ran the sound system on Sundays. Marlyn was a past member of the Amvets. He used to pheasant hunt and enjoyed watching the Cubs and Hawkeyes. He loved to spoil the grandchildren, was a great fan of their activities and attended many of their sporting events.

Marlyn is survived by two daughters, Anita Vanderwerf, and Cynthia Madsen and husband Kent, all of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Chester Vanderwerf of Aplington, Wayne Vanderwerf and wife Alvina of Cedar Falls, and Gerald Vanderwerf and wife Dixie of Nashua; and one brother-in-law, John Krull of Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gertie Vanderwerf on Sept. 29, 2000; his parents; one sister, Evelyn Krull; and a sister-in-law, Hattie Vanderwerf.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
