GRUNDY CENTER — Lena Escher, 102, of Grundy Center, formerly of Parkersburg, died Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Grundy Center Long Term Care Center from natural causes. Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg.

Lena was born to Johan and Henrika (Groeneveld) Trey on Jan. 6, 1902, in rural Butler County, Parkersburg. She received her education from rural schools near her home. On Oct. 5, 1929, Lena was united in marriage with Dick J. Escher at the Salem Lutheran Church parsonage. They made their home and farmed north of Parkersburg. To this union two daughters were born. The couple retired to Parkersburg in 1967. Lena was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, was life long member of Circle No. 1 and participated in the choir. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and tatting and loved to play bingo. Lena enjoyed conversing in Low German with her family and friends.

Lena is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Meints and husband Vincel of Wellsburg, and Phyllis Alberts and husband Gaiy of Hudson; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; two brothers and their wives, Ben and Stena Trey and John and Gesina Trey; and one sister and her husband, Gertrude and George Allspach.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
