Funeral services were held Saturday, January 7, from First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson for Laura E. Clipperton, 97, of Jefferson, longtime Greene county resident.

Dr. Richard Glasgow, pastor of the church, officiated. Marilynn Hoskinson was organist and soloist.

Casket bearers were Ronald and David Clipperton, Lynn Dobson, Dennis Conner, Dean Fox, Patrick Bihn, Alan Woldruff and Michael McGinness. Interment was in Highland Township Cemetery at Churdan.

Services were arranged by Slininger-Rossow Funeral Homes Inc. of Jefferson and Grand Junction.

Laura Emeline Clipperton was born September 24, 1897, at Churdan. She was the daughter of John Harley Guess and Emma May Fuhrmeister Guess.

Laura attended country school through the fifth grade, then graduated from Churdan High School in 1915. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate.

From 1916 to 1920 Laura taught rural school near Churdan, and from 1920 to 1921 she taught grade school in Churdan.

Laura was united in marriage to Ralph H. Clipperton on April 20, 1921, at the home of the bride's parents in Churdan. Laura and Ralph farmed for many years in Carroll county and Greene county. They retired to Jefferson in January 1951. Laura did domestic work for many years in Jefferson.

Laura was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. She was active in church circles and was a church deacon. She also belonged to Neighborhood Club and World War I Auxiliary in Jefferson.

On April 5, 1991 Laura moved to Jefferson Manor. There she died January 5, 1995. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband who died in 1967; three sisters, Lucile Guess, Helen Loveless and Mabel Whitson; and one brother, Walter Guess.

Survivors include one son, Orvis Clipperton and his wife Darlene of Jefferson; two daughters, Muriel Dobson and her husband Elmer of Lake City and Norma Conner and her husband Ralph of Glidden; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
