JEFFERSON HERALD, JEFFERSON, IOWA - MAY 21, 1936
SERVICES HELD FOR JAMES B. GILBERT, 65

Mr. Gilbert was born near Wheeling, MO, in Livingston County, August 12, 1870. On December 20, 1893, he was united in marriage to Alice Trosper of Breckenridge, MO. To this union six children were born. A daughter died in infancy, another daughter died at the age of seven years and a son, Wilford, passed in January 1929.

This married life of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert was spent in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. For the past twelve years they have resided on the A. J. Shriver farm south of Jefferson. Some 37 years ago he was baptized into Christ and was a member of the Church of Christ until death. For a few years he served as an elder in the church at Hale, MO, and for the past eight years was an elder at Jefferson.

For the past six months Mr. Gilbert had been in failing health. He spent 18 days in the Jongewaard hospital and was removed to the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines where the end came at 8 o’clock Saturday morning at the age of 65 years.

He is survived by three children, Evangelist V. M. Gilbert of this city, Mrs. C. L. Fiscus of Jefferson and Mrs. Fred Blair of Harlan, also the wife who was his companion for over 40 years, and seven grandchildren.

He expressed himself as being confident he would not get well and talked of the end which he believed to be near and gave some instructions as to how he wished the funeral services to be conducted. His request was that Blake Brothers quartet of Marshalltown be the singers. He heard them sing over the radio from K F J B (Marshalltown) quite often and enjoyed very much their sacred song service (8:30 to 9 o’clock each Sunday morning) and requested they sing in his funeral service.

The deceased had so many times talked about the good funeral discourses of Evangelist Earl W. Warren and he was called to deliver the address. The services were held from the Church of Christ Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, the Blake Brother (Oral, Lowell, Kenneth and Eldon Blake) singing, as follows: "The Riches Of Love In Christ Jesus," "Sleep They Last Sleep," "The Beautiful Land," and "Meet Me There."

The obituary was read and prayer offered by Otis J. Warren, a scripture reading by Oral Blake and the discourse by Earl W. Warren. Five of the pallbearers were officers of the Church of Christ and they were assisted by A. J. Shriver. The others were P. S. Gaer, Z. D. Robison, Ora McChurg, George Hartwigsen and Leonard Fiscus.

Three sisters of Mr. Gilbert who live in Carroll County, MO, were present for the funeral, Mrs. S. B. Isom with her husband, Mrs. George H. Hall, with her son Junior, Mrs. Josie Kinsey and also a niece, Eulavee Gilbert. The only surviving brother Fred Gilbert, with his wife and daughter, Mrs. Roy Clayton, came from Wakenda, MO, Mrs. Gilbert’s sister, Mrs. Clause Mitten, and two nephews Frank and Robert Potts came from Breckenridge, MO.

Others who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Gaer, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gaer and daughter from Kirkman, Iowa.
