A Sudden Summmons

The community was startled and grieved Saturday morning at the announcement of the sudden death of Ora, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zeno Bass, which occurred at his fathers home, in Rawles township, early that morning. The evening before while putting away his team he was fatally kicked by one of the horses. He was alone at the time but was shortly discovered by a younger brother who notified the family and he was taken to the house and Dr. Campbell at once summoned. An examination by the doctor revealed the imprint of the horse's hoof upon his left breast just over the heart and lungs. Although conscious, there was an entire absence of pulse and at 5 o'clock Saturday morning he passed away, internal hemorrhage of the lungs from ruptured blood vessels being the immediate cause of his death. Funeral services were held at the house Sunday at 9 o'clock, Rev. C.W Brewer officiating. His text was 1st Samuel 20-3: "There is but one step between me and death." Despite the rain a very large concourse of friends was one of the most touching and pathetic in the history of the township. A friend of the family hands us the following:

Obituary.
Ora Isom Bass was born in Allen County, Kansas, July 5th, 1870. Died August 17th, 1895, aged twenty-five years one month and twelve days. Ora, as he was familiarly called was a bright and intelligent young man, a general favorite with all his associates, sober and industrious and whose every aim seemed to be to carry out the Master's will to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Frank and generous hearted, his delight was to walk uprightly before his fellow men. He was the idol of his parents, a favorite with brothers and sisters and honored by a large circle of friends. Such was the life of him whom we are called on today to pay the last sad rites of respects to. A bright future, indeed seemed to be just dawning for our Ora; yet how true those solemn words burn deep down in our hearts. "In the midst of life we are in death" and when we stop to brush a tear away or hush a sob the still loving voice of Jesus comes to us with angelic sweetness and says, "Come unto me and I will give you rest," and by faith in the Master we can look beyond this life of toll, care and accident to a life forever in the presence of God. "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord." In the death of Ora a father and mother, three brothers and three sisters are left to mourn the loss of a loving son and affectionate brother.
