Joseph Edward McCluskey was born at Boulder, CO., Oct. 5, 1862 and died at his home near Thurman, March 11, 1934 at the age of 71 years, 5 months, 6 days. When he was about a year old his parents returned to Iowa, their former home, settling near Sidney, and here they lived until the year 1868 when they moved to Kansas for a stay of eight or nine years, then again returned to Iowa. Sixteen children made up the family.

December 10, 1889, Joseph was united in marriage with Roberta Hanley of Sidney, who passed to her reward June 12, 1931. To this union five children were born, three of whom are living, Fred and Wilbur McCluskey and Mrs. Flossie Rhoades, all of Sidney.

Mr. McCluskey attended country schools the little time he could be spared from work on the farm. When he was 14 his father died and left him the main support of the family, a task which he performed faithfully and well. When he married , he and his bride united with Sidney Baptist church, with which they affiliated until death. Surviving brothers and sisters are Matthew of Glenwood; Bert L. of Osakis, Minnesota; Lucy Jacobs of Omaha. Half brothers and sisters are W.H. Rowe of Glenwood; J.L. Rowe of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Mary Frizzel, whose home is at Weeping Water, Nebraska.

Mr. McCluskey had been in about normal health for one of his age. Last Sunday his son Fred and the latter's family were visiting him. He seemed in about his usual spirits; but soon after their arrival at their home in Sidney and while getting ready to attend church the word came of his sudden death.

Funeral services were held from the Wildberger funeral home Tuesday afternoon. Rev. C.W. Howard, Methodist pastor in charge. Interment was in Sidney cemetery.
