This will was very difficult to read

Fremont County Iowa January 20, 1867

I Hugh Copeland of said State and County being in a declining state of health but of sane mind
induces me to make and constitute this my last will and testament in way and manner following:

First - I resign my soul to God who gave it to me and my body to the dust nothing doubting that I
shall receive the same reunited on that great day for which all other days were made and touching
such wordly(sic) good as God in his providence has trusted me with. I will and bequeath as follows:
I will and bequeath to my two grandchildren Elizabeth (Lanning?) and Edward (Lanning?) One
Hundred Dollars each and John F. and H. W. and A. Beecher Copeland shall have received all the
notes that has the word relinquished wrote on them They will stand ____ from any farther claim on
my estate and the evidence of advances made which stand annexed following names.

Aggregate $1770.00 which is to be added to the sum total and after Hester Ann has selected such
articles as she may wish the entire amount to be divided by the figure nine. Three shares in every
instance falling to Hester A. Copeland. And I do hereby appoint Hester A. Copeland, William
McCracken and John F. Copeland Executors and Attorneys of this my last will and testament by
whom no letters of administration shall be taken no bonds filed and no securities requrired and
thereby _____ my said executors as my Attorneys at Law to sue and be sued plead and be
impleaded sell and convey real estate at such times as they in their Judgment may think best and
should any difference arise in their views Ex Judge Greenwood or J. L. Mitchel shall he called as a
referee from whose decision there shall be no appeal.

And I do hereby renounce and revoke all former wills whether written or noncupative and sign this
as my last and only will made and signed day and year above written.

A CODICIL

In presence of James A. Gray and Riley Keeler.....I will and bequeath to Martha Williamson the
following described parcels of land, viz the North West fourth of the North West fourth of Section
Three in Township Sixty Nine North of Range Forty Two West, and also the following described
piece of land containing five acres the buts and boundries of which shall agree with the deed made
by Martin D. Humphrey and from Humphrey to me to have and to hold against the claims of all and
every person or persons. And my estate not being exhausted when shares amount to One
Thousand Dollars each then John and Hugh and D__k Copeland shall draw equal shares
throughout.
Signed and sealed this 23rd day of January 1869....Hugh Copeland

Proved and admitted to probate at the November Term A.D. 1875...H. R. Laird, Clerk of the Circuit
Court
