Elmer L. Bates,86, a longtime Dows area resident died on Friday evening at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion where he had been taken earlier in the day.

Funeral services were held Monday morning from the Willm Funeral Home in Dows. Rev. W.O. Niles, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiated and burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

He was born in Monona County, Iowa on November 30, 1885 and was the son of James and Marcella Dent Bates. He had spent most of his life in the Dows area but for a time homesteaded in Minnesota. For thirteen years he made his home in Dows with his sister, Mrs. Mildred Hill and for the past six years had resided at the Heritage Home in Clarion and more recently at Golden Acres Manor in Dows.

Mr. Bates never married and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Cecil Butenhoff of Panama City, Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
