Eva Heilskov of Hampton died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at the age of 95.
Eva Antonette Simonsen was born in Cedar Rapids on November 22, 1907, to Sena (Jensen) and Anton Simonsen. Her parents farmed near Hampton and at Hayward, Minn., moving their belongings to Hayward by train. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in Minnesota and often walked to school from Hayward to Albert Lea.
She married Paul Heilskov, Sr., on February 22, 1934, in her parents' home at Hayward, Minn.
Eva's mother immigrated from Lokken, Denmark, her father from Horsens, Denmark and her husband, Paul from Logstrup, Denmark, so she could speak and write fluent Danish. She was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton and of the KYN Club.
Eva was a homemaker, living most of her life on their farm four miles north and three miles east of Hampton. She was a wonderful cook. You never left her house without a cup of coffee and some delicious homemade rolls, cookies, or peach pie.
At Christmas, when all the grandchildren came home, they all had soft flannel pajamas that she had made waiting for them to wear on Christmas Eve. She loved sewing, knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by two daughters, Sena (Robert) Ahrens, Hollandale, Wis. and Agnes (Chuck) Allison, Hampton; one son, Kenneth (Pam) Heilskov, Ankeny; and two daughters-in-law; Jane Heilskov, Mason City and Clair Iverson, Waverly.
She was the loving Grandmother of Michael Ahrens, Madison, Wis.; Lisa (James) Broussard, Mansfield, Tex.; Craig (Sandy) Ahrens, South Elgin, Ill.; Rachael (Tim) Fjestad, Johnston; Charles (Janet) Allison, Edina, Minn.; Ann (Dave) Sincebaugh, Farmington, Minn.; Matt (Heidi) Heilskov, Ankeny; Chris (Jill) Heilskov, Des Moines; Julie (Mike) Willms, Clear Lake; Becky (Scott) Miller, Mason City; Jodie (Tyler) Kruse, Omaha, Neb.; Jeff (Christine) Brandt, Mason City; and Molly Brandt, Rochester, Minn. She also had a very special rapport with her great-grand-children; Erin, Megan, and Kirsten Broussard; Brianna and Cara Ahrens; Kate and Elizabeth Fjelstad; Jessica and Kristine Allison; Andrew, Lauren, and Megan Sincebaugh; Brandon, Riley and Ethan Heilskov; Ashley, Emily and Kyle Willms; and Sydney and Samantha Miller.
She will be sorrowfully missed by her family, friends, and many whom she simply met along the way. She played the mouth organ (harmonica), and the last two years the great-grandchildren were each given one to play , while watching her, in amazement, playing a tune.
She was preceded in death by her parents, (1948 and 1969); her husband, Paul, Sr. (1972); one son, Paul, Jr., Mason City (1998); two brothers; Neils Simonsen, Alden, Minn.,; Clarance Simonsen, Hampton; and three sisters; Agnes Soland, Hampton, Addie Larsen, Coulter and Pansy Nelson, Albert Lea, Minn.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hampton Hospital, the Hampton Hospital Nursing Facility, Hospice, and her many dear friends and relatives. She will be deeply missed and remembered.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton was in charge of arrangements.
