Sheffield, Oct. 10 - Walter Gerfen, age fifty-six, died suddenly Wednesday evening, in a Des Moines hospital, following a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Wartnaby Funeral home, at 2:00 o'clock, with Rev. R.J. Huck in charge. The Harlo Ray Massee American Legion Post also assisted in the services. Burial was made in the St. John Lutheran cemetery.

Walter Gerfen was born December 24, 1894 in Richland township, and spent his entire life in this community with the exception of time spent in the service. He served in both World War I and World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Gerfen, three sisters, Mrs. Anna Hogberg, Mrs. A.L. Wartnaby and Mrs. Virgil Holdren, and one brother, Henry Gerfen.
