Popejoy - Funeral services were held at the Scott Funeral Home in Alden on Sunday afternoon with burial in the Oakhill cemetery south of Popejoy for Bird Jesse Nolton*. Rev. W.H. Faris, pastor of the Alden Methodist church in Alden, officiated.

Bird Jesse Nolte*, son of Frank H. and Jessie Dodd Nolton, was born in the village of Oakland Valley on February 17, 1886. He was killed by a falling tree while working at wood cutting on a farm near Alden on February 15, 1952, just to days before his [illegible] birthday.

When a small boy his parents moved to Iowa Falls and there he received his schooling. Many years later the family moved back to Oakland Valley and lived there several years before buying a home in Popejoy. During much of his life he was engaged in carpentering and farm work.

Enlisting on May 17, 1917 during the first World War, he was among the first sent overseas, serving in the 168th Regiment of the Rainbow Division where he saw service in seven battles in the Defense Sector. He was discharged on May 16, 1919.

His parents, one brother and two sisters, preceded him in death. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Parcy Hagenson and one brother, Will E. Nolton, both of Thompson, Iowa, and by many relatives and friends.

The village of Oakland Valley was platted by his grandfather Jesse Dodd in 1857.
