Old resident of Geneva passed away last Tuesday
Thornton F. Jones one of the Pioneer residents of this county died last Tuesday morning at his home in Geneva, after a extended illness with kidney and heart trouble. Mr. Jones has not been in the best of health for several years and his final summons was not unlooked for by his friends. He was born in Indiana on September 8th 1842 and when he was a small boy moved with his parents to Black Hawk county. After a few years residence there they moved to Geneva and that place has been his home ever since. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Manifold and to them eight children were born, four of whom have passed to the other land; the mother died thirty-two years ago. The children living are T.E. Jones of Hamilton township this county, J. H. Jones of Belmond, Mrs F. A. Manifold of Dows and Jessie Jones who resided at home with her father.
Mr Jones spent his earlier days at farming in Geneva township, and then for a dozen or so years he conducted a cream hauling route to Geneva creamery. Later he engaged in the rural mail carrier work and followed this vocation for about 10 years finding it necessary to resign a couple of years ago on account of ill health.
Mr. Jones was a loyal member of the Odd Fellows lodge and when he was able one of its most active members. He was a kind friend and neighbor and his large circle of acquaintances in the community in which he lived for so long will learn of his death with regret.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Geneva yesterday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. E. Evans pastor of the Baptist church of this city and the remains were interred beside those of his wife in Four Mile grove cemetery in Geneva.
