OCTOGENARIAN ANSWERS THE FINAL SUMMONS THIS MORNING

(From Monday's Daily.)

Sanford Ripley, eighty-seven years old, and probably the oldest person in point of residence in Floyd County, died this morning at nine o'clock at his home west of Carrville near "Ripley Mill." The immediate cause of his death was not learned. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Mr. Ripley first came to Iowa from Ohio in 1844, landing at Muscatine. He returned to Ohio and came again to Muscatine in the year 1853, coming from his Ohio home by steamboat to Muscatine and by team from Muscatine to the present site of Nashua.

In the next year, 1854, he took government land six miles south and east of this city in Riverton township, and had since resided on the banks of the Cedar River, at what is now commonly known as Ripley's Mill.

Mr. Ripley enjoyed good bodily health, his mind was clear, and his memory good. Mr. Ripley paid the Intelligence office a visit the 1st of May. He then said that there was but one other man whom he knew who still lives, that came to this country at near the time he did, this person being David Dyas who now resides in Riverton Township. The deceased had helped materially to develop Iowa and Floyd county and bring it up to the standard of present day civilization and prosperity.
