Died in Rockford, Sept. 9, 1885, of heart disease, age 67 years.
John J. Gaylord was born in Connecticut, Dec. 12, 1818. He resided in that state until 1861, engaged in the various occupations of farming, blacksmithing, forging edged tools and working in machine shops, and finally working in a paper mill.
He was married in March, 1839, to Charlotte A. Johnson, of Cornwall, Conn. In 1861, wishing for other and larger fields of labor, he sought the west, and with an adopted boy came to Floyd county and located on a farm two miles east of where Nora Springs now stands, and engaged for four years in improving and bringing it under a state of cultivation.
In 1864 Mrs. Gaylord and daughter joined him, where he had erected a brick residence in the grove near town. In this house they lived until 1874, when Mrs. Gaylord died, Nov. 8th. In 1875 he built two houses in town and made other improvements, adding to the growth of the village. In 1878 he engaged in the mercantile business, which he has followed up to the present time.
