Bernice Merrick dies at 71; Rites Wednesday

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Miss Bernice Merrick, 71, of Charles City, died Sunday afternoon at the Chautauqua Guest Home where she had been a patient the last six months.

Miss Merrick was a life long resident of this area. She taught history in the Charles City public school system from 1926 to 1949 when she was forced to retire because of failing health.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Bernice Merrick was born January 11, 1891, in Scott Township Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles D. and Mary W. (Wilder) Merrick.

She is survived by two sisters, Miss Lucia Merrick, Charles City; Mrs Doris G. Neal, of Rolla, Mo., and a brother Hubert W. Merrick, Dougherty.

Two brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home. The Rev. Lester Hunt, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.
