NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Robert Schmidt, 85, of Nora Springs, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. David Werges officiating.

Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church.

Obituary for Robert Henry Schmidt

Robert Schmidt, 85, of Nora Springs, died Thursday, November 24, 2016, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday (November 28, 2016) at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs with Reverend David Werges officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held Sunday (November 27, 2016) from 2-5pm at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church.

Robert Henry Schmidt was born on February 27, 1931 to Emil and Elizabeth (Wirtjes) Schmidt on their family farm in Worth County. He attended Rock Falls High School, graduating in 1950.
Following graduation, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951. He served as a helicopter mechanic for four years.

In 1952 Robert married the love of his life, Donna Marah, in Nora Springs. The couple moved to Florida and North Carolina before settling in Nora Springs. In 1955 Robert and Donna were blessed with a daughter, Denise. Donna and Robert were married 64+ years.

Robert taught at NIACC as the Ag Equipment teacher and ran the local Standard Oil Station. He also spent 34 years working for John Deere as a salesman, retiring in 1993.

Robert enjoyed bowling, woodworking, gardening, and repairing equipment. He was a gentle man who loved to feed the wildlife. Most of all, Robert loved his family, and all the time he was able to spend with them.

Robert was a longtime member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, and a proud member of the Nora Springs community, a community he never wished to leave.
Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Donna; his son-in-law, Ken Herout, of Varna, IL; his granddaughters, Faith Herout of Morris, IL, and Kimberly Herout of Varna, IL; his brother, Donald (Anna Jean) Schmidt of Hotchkiss, CO; as well as numerous, nieces, nephews and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Denise Herout; siblings: Lois Schmidt in infancy, Jamie Schmidt in infancy, and Maxine Kopetjka.
