Obituary for Lyle W. Schafer

Lyle William Schafer age 85 of Greene, Iowa, died Friday, August 19, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016, at St. John United Church of Christ - Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua with interment with military honors in the Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home - Olson chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Lyle William Schafer was born October 15, 1930, in rural Bremer County, Iowa, near Plainfield, the son of Frederick William and Gladys Maude (Sutcliffe) Schafer. He received his education in Plainfield and was a graduate of the Plainfield High School class of 1949. While in high school, he met the love of his life and on September 26, 1953, at St. John United church of Christ – Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua, he married Sylvia Lydia Schafer. To this union three sons were born. On July 3, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He and Sylvia lived a short time in California until Lyle was honorably discharged on June 10, 1955.

The couple began farming near Charles City and also lived in Charles City until 1964 when they made their permanent move to their current home in Greene. Lyle had hauled milk, worked at McRoberts Implement in Greene, and for six years owned and operated the Greene Inn Restaurant.

He spent the last years of employment as a rural mail carrier. He and Sylvia loved traveling, especially their trips to Colorado, Hawaii, Seattle and the East Coast. He had been an active bowler, enjoyed playing cards and golfing.

Survivors include three sons, Calvin (Jani) Schafer of Bailey, Colorado, Merlin (Tammy Hain) Schafer of Mason City, James (Corey Head) Schafer of San Francisco; eight grandchildren, Merrille (Chad) Hinz, Cherlyn Schafer, Bill Schafer, Aubrie (Isaiah Egan) Schafer, Toby Schafer, Daniel Schafer, Ricky Schafer, Brooke (Tim) Parker; six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on February 11, 2013 and three sisters.
