Obituary for Daniel Franzen

Daniel A. Franzen, age 77, of Nashua, Iowa, died Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Cedar Vale Assisted Living in Nashua.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Rev. Lonnie Wilkerson presiding.

Interment will be in the Horton Cemetery with Adam Franzen, Justin Franzen, Cody Knutson, Ryan Franzen, Tyler Franzen, and Kyle Franzen serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Valerie Chestnut, Ami Hagen, Kayla Franzen, Megan Martin, and Faith Franzen.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Dan to St. Croix Hospice in New Hampton.

Daniel Albert Franzen was born July 7, 1938, in rural Bremer County, Iowa, the son of Matthias and Laura (Garbes) Franzen. He attended school in Plainfield and was a 1956 graduate from Plainfield High School. After graduating, Dan worked as a hired hand for various neighbors.

Dan was introduced to June Beck at a dance at the Riviera Ballroom in Janesville, Iowa. The couple were united in marriage on March 30, 1958, at The Republic Church in rural Nashua. To this union five sons were born.

The day after getting married, Dan started working at White Farm in Charles City. He spent the next 31 years working for the company leaving in 1989. Dan then took a position at the Plainfield Co-Op working there until his retirement.

Dan enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. Whether it was the pursuit of a big buck in the woods, or the push for Roosters in the field, Dan really loved the hunt and the life lessons he learned from it. He also enjoyed fishing, taking many trips to Canada, and playing golf in the summer. Dan liked to watch many different sports on television, especially baseball.

Dan had a great sense of humor and was known for his one liners. He always had a great story or joke to tell. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dan is survived by his wife of 57 years, June Franzen; five sons, Jim (Colleen) Franzen of Waverly, IA, Jeff (Jean) Franzen of Waverly, IA, Galen (Sandy) Franzen of Nashua, IA, Scott Franzen of Nashua, IA, and Tom (Doreen) Franzen of Nashua IA; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; five brothers, Matthias "Butch" (Nancy) Franzen of Waverly, IA, David (Cathy) Franzen of Plainfield, IA, Donald (Kathy) Franzen of Plainfield, IA, Steven (Connie) Franzen of Plainfield, IA, and Dennis (Kim) Franzen of Plainfield, IA; seven sisters, Norma Nolting of New Hampton, IA, Eleanor (Don) Storjohann of Cedar Falls, IA, Laura Ann (Bill) Pride of Charles City, IA, Carolyn (Don) Cole of Bonita Springs, FL, Muriel Steva of Waterloo, IA, Glenda Endelman (Tim Zoll) of Ionia, IA, and Debra Thompson (Jerry Roth) of Waterloo, IA; one sister-in-law, Dona Franzen of Waverly, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward Franzen; sister, Dorothy Franzen.
