Bonnie Skaar Johnson, 74, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Cedar Health in Charles City due to complications of MS.

A memorial service for Bonnie Johnson will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Hauser Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016 and will continue one hour prior to the memorial service Thursday at the church.

Bonnie was born on October 26, 1941 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She was raised in a small Lutheran community in Hayward, Minnesota. Bonnie graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1959 and Luther College in 1963, with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Norwegian.

Bonnie married Carl Johnson in June 1962, and they later divorced. They were blessed with two children: Diedrich and Erika. Bonnie taught children in the Title 1 reading program for 33 years in Charles City schools, the majority of the time at IC School.

Bonnie was a member of P.E.O. Chapter JQ and enjoyed book clubs and bridge club. She was an ADK member and was the recording secretary. She was a deacon at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and secretary of WELCA, served on many committees, and was a member of the Charles City Library Board of Directors. After retirement, Bonnie especially enjoyed time with friends and visits to Colorado to be with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Diedrich Johnson of Fraser, CO, and daughter, Erika (Don) Alpern of Littleton, CO, with their children Emma and Sam; two brothers: Gary (Peggy) Skaar of Pensacola, FL and Lee (Joyce) Skaar of Dundas, MN; and four nieces and nephews: Cara Hanson McDowell, Gjert Skaar, Kristin Skaar, and Anna Skaar.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Erling and Audrey Skaar; sister Gwen Hanson; brother-in-law Richard Hanson; nephew Graden Hanson and his wife Jesse.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Charles City Public Library, Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa or Hayward Lutheran Church in Hayward, Minnesota.
