Dan D. Stocks
dies following
long illness

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church for Dan D. Stocks, 79, a resident of Charles City since 1909. He died Friday at the Cedar Valley Hospital. Death was attributed to a lingering illness. He was a retired Oliver worker. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens with Grossman-Hage Funeral Home in charge.

Born August 3, 1881 in Elroy, Illinois, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Levi Stocks. He received his education in the Floyd County rural schools. August 13, 1903 he was married to Edith Mae Fox in Charles City. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Gordon, Floyd; two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Thorsen, Puposky, Minn., and Mrs. R. L. Allison, Charles City, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Findagrave has a photo of his grave marker -- which shows the name "DeVon W. Stocks".

The 1930 Census has his name as De Von D., as does the World War I Draft Registration.

The newspaper obituary does indeed show his name as "Dan D. Stocks."

Found on the 1940 census for Ward 3 Charles City, Iowa. Listed with his wife Edith Mae Stocks. He was age 58 and she was age 55. It said he was born in Illinois, and she was born in Indiana.
