Service: Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.; Bayou Bend on Cedar River in Charles City

Merle Stockness, 69, of Charles City passed away Monday, September 28, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

A celebration of life for Merle Stockness will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Bayou Bend along the Cedar River in Charles City.

Merle Leon Stockness was born October 26, 1945 in Seattle, Washington. He lived in Seattle for a short time before moving to St. Paul, Minnesota where he attended school and graduated from high school. After graduation, Merle enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during Vietnam and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded several sharpshooter certificates while in the Army as well.

After his honorable discharge, Merle worked for Nuclear Power Plants throughout the United States and in Japan. He fixed and maintained the coils at over 30 nuclear power plants keeping the reactors cool. Merle was one of several people who were trapped in an elevator when the Three Mile Island catastrophe took place.

Merle was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed fixing up old cars into hotrods to earn extra money. Merle was united in marriage to Cheryl Weigel on November 20, 2006. The couple made their home in Charles City. He was very meticulous about his yardwork and was constantly doing something outside. Merle loved hunting, especially deer and pheasants, and fishing. He was an avid gun collector, a very good cook and enjoyed entertaining others at his home.

Living family members include his wife, Cheryl of Charles City; one daughter; eight step-children; three sisters; along with several nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives.
