GRIMES, IOWA - Bernald “Bud” Girkin, 81, of Grimes, and formerly Colwell and Charles City, Iowa, died Monday, October 5, 2015, at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Gary Mayer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday.

Bernald "Bud" Girkin, 81, of Grimes, formerly Colwell and Charles City, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015, at his home in Grimes.

A funeral service for Bud Girkin will be held Thursday, October 8, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Gary Mayer will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Bernald Elmer Girkin, the son of Dietrich and Myrtle (Meyers) Girkin, was born in Floyd County, Iowa on May 28, 1934. He was raised in the Colwell area and attended country school. Bud helped on the family farm and was united in marriage to Barbara Chestek on October 19, 1955. During their 30 years together, this union was blessed with six children: Dianna, Valerie, Rana, Tami, Andy and Kevin.

Bud joined the Army in 1956, and served his country for almost two years before he was honorably discharged. He returned to the Colwell area to continue farming. Bud owned and operated the Girkin DX Station in Colwell for a few years before moving to Charles City, where he began selling cars at Bissonnette Chevrolet. He sold cars in Charles City and Mason City for 30 years before retiring to Grimes in 2000.

Bud loved to dance and met Joyce (Downing) Wedemeyer at the Lake Robbins Ballroom near Woodward, Iowa. The couple was married July 31, 2004, at the ballroom and made their home in Grimes. They went dancing together whenever possible and rode their bicycles on the trails, spending quality time with one another. Bud enjoyed watching game shows, playing cards and spending time with his family.

Living family members include his wife, Joyce of Grimes; six children: Dianna (Roger) Arndt of Casper, Wyoming, Valerie (Randy) Mead of Grimes, Rana (Mark) Cross of Southington, Connecticut, Tami (Fred) Mack of New York, New York, Andy (Jenny) Girkin of Urbandale and Kevin (Brenda) Girkin of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; three step-children: Tamara Watts-McPhail (Glen McPhail) of Ankeny, Robert Wedemeyer of Des Moines and Michael (Jill) Wedemeyer of Adel; two step-grandchildren; three sisters: Arlene Sekander, Geraldine (Bob) Freese and Joyce D'Angelo; two brothers: Alvin (Shirley) Girkin and Gary (Linda) Girkin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
