CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Arlene Garden, 88, of Charles City, formerly of Colwell, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert C. Treichel will officiate. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at Hauser Funeral Home and an hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Arlene Mary (Bauman) Garden was born in Otisco, Minnesota on Nov. 27, 1926, to Arthur and Florence (Gerbig) Bauman. Arlene attended school in Stacyville and Lanesboro, Minnesota. She had two brothers, John and Ben Bauman. On Oct. 27, 1948, Arlene married Ralph Robert Garden at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Arlene and Ralph had three sons: Duane, Mike and Bob, and one daughter, Barbara. The family resided in the Colwell area until Arlene moved to Charles City in 2009.

Arlene worked as a cook at the Colwell Consolidated School until it was closed. In 1969 Ralph and Arlene purchased the local grocery store (Garden Grocery). Arlene was the postmistress from 1969 to 2004 when she retired. Arlene was a member of the United Church of Christ in Colwell since 1966. She was very active in the UCC Women’s Fellowship, Colwell Culture Club, and the Colwell Betterment Committee. She enjoyed people and was an important part of the community. Arlene had many friends and was well known for her smile and laugh.

Living family members include her children: Duane (Wanda) Garden of Acme, Pennsylvania, Barbara Garden of Charles City, Mike (Sharon) Garden of Osage, and Bob (Janet) Garden of Charles City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, Ben Bauman of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Florence Bauman; husband, Ralph Garden, and one brother, John Bauman.
