Samuel Sours – January 17, 1836 – January 23, 1922

SAMUEL SOURS

Samuel Sours was born in Summit County, Ohio, January 17, 1836. He died at the home of his son, S. R. Sours in Marble rock, January 23, 1922, at 8 p.m.

At the age of 21 years Mr. Sours came to marble Rock and taught the second school held in Union township. He was married to Anna M. Rex on February 8, 1857, in Marble Rock where he engaged in farming.

Because of the health of his parents who resided in Ohio, the early years of their married life was divided between the two places. After the death of the parents a permanent home was established in this community. Mrs. Sours preceded him in death on November 6, 1914.

The following children were born to bless this happy union: Clara, Alice, John Calvin, William A., and Ray Floyd, all deceased; Ellen Jane Ritter, Samuel R. Sours, Philip Sours, Mary A. Paley, Lew H. Sours, Roy J Sours, who still survive; 31 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sours enlisted in Company B, 7th Iowa Infantry in February 1864, and was one of three brothers who were in the army together. To say that Mr. Sours was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea is to indicate pretty definitely the trials and hardships which he endured. No man could undergo such service and come out the same physically. He received his discharge in July 1865, and returned home to take up the duties of the private citizen. As long as the local Grand Army of the Republic was maintained Mr. Sours was devoted to the duties of the order.

Mr. Sours became a member of the church of Christ in early manhood, a charter member of the church in Marble Rock, always a faithful member, serving many years on the official board, and liberal in the financial support of the work of the Kingdom.
