Warren Howell – ca. 1845 -- 1925

Our community was shocked Tuesday night when it was known that Warren Howell had passed away under unusually sad circumstance.

Mr. Howell, who was 80 years of age, lived alone in his home just west of Marble Rock, in what was formerly the old stone school house. He was last seen alive Thursday afternoon.

Neighbors passing the house several times daily noticed the door standing open and his water pail hanging on the pump and supposed he was around the place as usual. It was not until Tuesday evening that the neighbors realized that he had not been seen for five days and calling an officer made an investigation.

The body was found fully dressed, lying on the couch, and had evidently been dead for several days. No marks of violence were found on his person or in the room and indicated death was due to natural causes. $462 was found upon his person, $12 being in the pocketbook he was accustomed to carry. Mr. Howell’s wife and son, John, left him several years ago, going east to make their home. It was not known that he had other relatives living.

Burial services were held Wednesday afternoon and were in charge of Rev. Carl Smith, of the Baptist Church. Interment was the West Side Cemetery. Mr. Howell was an industrious man always busy until old age caused him to rest.
