DOVER, ARKANSAS - Sylvia Voyna, 88, of Dover, Arkansas, and formerly of Charles City and Bondurant, Iowa, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the Taylor House Hospice facility in Des Moines.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag from Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City will officiate. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 18, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Sylvia Voyna, 88, a resident of Dover, Arkansas, moving there from Charles City after retirement, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the Taylor House Hospice facility in Des Moines after a brief illness. She was most recently living in Bondurant, Iowa to be closer to some of her family during her illness.

A funeral service for Sylvia Voyna will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag from Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City will officiate. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015 and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Sylvia Amelia Voyna, the daughter of Theodore and Alice (Saatoff) Kessler, was born October 14, 1926 in Pleasant Township, Wright County; just east of Belmond, Iowa. She attended school in Clear Lake and later her family moved and farmed near Elma and Riceville, Iowa.

Sylvia was united in marriage to Edmund John Voyna on October 23, 1945 in Nashua, Iowa at "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" and this union was blessed with five children: Steven, Carol, Leland, Kevin and Vicki. She worked at Ben Franklin five and dime store, Spurgeons, Trowbridges, Holiday Station café, owned and ran Sylvia's Westside Café for several years and worked at Gibson's Discount Store.

Sylvia loved spending time with her family and had tremendous love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandkids. She also enjoyed gardening, growing roses, all kinds of trees, cooking and baking. Sylvia had a special place in her heart for all of her furry friends; her dogs and cats.

Living family members include her five children: Steven (Cheryl) Voyna of Bondurant, Carol (Gerald) Johnson of Bassett, Leland Voyna of Charles City, Kevin Voyna of Fort Dodge and Vicki Voyna of Dover, Arkansas; grandchildren: Michelle Skarpness, David (Angie) Voyna, Angela Voyna, Dr. Kristina Voyna, Michael Rassmussen, Nancy (Zach) Fairhurst, Shaun Janssen, Susan Janssen and Shane Janssen; great grandchildren: Drew Johnson, Seth Diercks, Alexis Skarpness, Chase Skarpness, Taylor Voyna, Kirsten Rassmussen, Keegan Rassmussen, Ashton Fairhurst, Corbin Fairhurst and Eva Voyna; two brothers: Leonard Kessler of Lime Springs and Ervin Kessler of Riceville; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edmund in 2006; four brothers: Reint, Walter, Raymond and Merle Kessler; and two sister: Elizabeth Gruis and Greone Timmerman.
