Nellie M Whitesell – September 11, 1886 – September 18, 1960

DAUGHTER OF PIONEERS DIES IN NORA SPRINGS

Nora Springs – Miss Nellie Whitesell, 74, died Sunday at the Nora Springs Nursing Home. She had been there since suffering a heart attack September 2.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church. Rev. Burnell Krager of Des Moines will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery.

Born September 11, 1886, she was the daughter of John W. and Flora A. Walker Whitesell. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Whitesell, were among the pioneer settlers in Rock Grove Township. Her father and grandfather owned the old rock Grove mill south of Nora Springs. Miss Whitesell, who was a member of the Floyd County Historical Society, had in her possession the original land grant deed signed by President Franklin Pierce.

A past worthy matron of Golden Chapter, 202, Order of Eastern Stars and the White Shrine at Mason City, she was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary here. She was educated at the Nora springs Seminary and was a saleslady for a Kansas City land company in Brownsville, Texas. She also lived in Idaho for a time.

Surviving are a nephew, Hugh Whitesell, two great nieces and a great nephew, Sheryl, Susan and Jon Whitesell, Nora Springs.
