CHARLES CITY, IOWA - James “Jim” Zander Sr., 73, of Charles City died Sunday, March 15, 2015, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Nashua.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and at the church an hour prior to the service on Friday.

James "Jim" Zander, Sr., 73, of Charles City, died Sunday, March 15, 2015, at his home.

James Emory Zander, Sr., son of Edwin and Gladys (Biermann) Zander, was born on August 27, 1941 in Greene. Jim was confirmed at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He graduated from Tripoli High School in 1960.

James was united in marriage to Judith Phelps on October 21, 1962 at Plainfield Methodist Church. To this union four children were born. Jim worked at the Oliver/White Farm Corporation from 1962-1993, then owned and operated Mr. Z's Cafe in Bassett until retirement. Jim was known for his delicious homemade pies.

For many years he was a 4-H leader and served on the Floyd County Fair board. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men and Midis. Jim was an outdoors guy, he enjoyed camping, fishing, biking and spending time at the lake house on Lake Cornelia.

Living family members include his wife, Judy Zander of Charles City, four children; James (Colleen) Zander of Charles City, Julie (Stacey) Appel of McDonough, Georgia, Jennifer Zander Evenson of Houston, Minnesota and Jason (Michelle) Zander of Boone; 11 grandchildren; Katie (Brad) Lehman, Jonathan Zander, Sarah Sullivan, Mark Mennenga, Benjamin and Jordan Appel, Valerie and Thomas Hibbs, Sheila (Peter) Nieland, Nicholas (Rhianna) Zander and Megan Woodward; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Sullivan, Royce Lehman and Isabella Fisher; a brother-in-law, Raymond Bloem.
