John Alanson Shanks – December 21, 1879 – December 6, 1962

JOHN SHANKS DIES AT NORA SPRINGS; SERVICES SUNDAY

Nora Springs --- John A. Shanks, 83, died Thursday at a nursing home here. The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Nora Springs Methodist Church, where he was sexton the last 11 years. The Rev. D. E. Cannaday will officiate. Burial will be in the Rock Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Shanks was born December 21, 1879, in Butler County, the son of John and Mary Olive Whitney Shanks. The family moved to Nora Springs in 1880. Mr. Shanks live in the Nora Springs area from then on, excepting for nine years when the family farmed south of Mason City.

On November 19, 1906, he was married to Daisy Viola Hathaway in Nora Springs. She preceded him in death in 1959. He also was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

He was in the implement business from 1907 to 1909. From 1909 to 1942 he farmed near Nora Springs. He retired from farming in 1942 and moved to Nora Springs.

Mr. Shanks is survived by a sister, Mrs. J. F. (Olive) Stott, 16 Connecticut NE, Mason City, and three brothers, Charles, Ray and Kenneth, Nora Springs.
