James Benjamin Hathaway – August 10, 1855 – September 17, 1934

FORMER MERCHANT SUCCUMBS AT NORA SPRINGS WHILE SITTING IN CHAIRNora Springs, September 21 – Funeral services for J. B. Hathaway, 79, were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. J. E. DeLong, his pastor, assisted by the Rev. J. M. Krafft, conducting the services. Mrs. O. L. Hansen sang. Burial was at Rock Grove.
James Benjamin Hathaway was born August 10, 1855 in St. Lawrence County, New York. When 9 he came with his parents to a farm near Sumner. On January 17, 1878, he was married to Emma Viola Sears. One child, Daisy Viola, now Mrs. John Shanks, was born.
Mr. Hathaway came to Nora Springs 33 years ago where for some time he was engaged in both the hardware and mercantile business. Fourteen years ago he and his wife came to live with their children, Mr. and Mrs. John Shanks. About two years ago Mr. Hathaway suffered a serious illness from which he made a partial recovery. During this time his wife died. Monday afternoon he died while sitting in his chair.
He joined the United Brethren church when a young man, later being transferred to the Methodist church of which he was a member until his death.
He is survived by one daughter, Daisy V. Shanks, his son-in-law John Shanks, one brother, S. L. Hathaway, and two nieces, Mrs. Frank Nolte and Miss Jennie Hathaway, all of Waverly.
