LaVola was born in rural Clarksville in Butler County, the daughter of Helmuth C. and Bertha M. Wedeking. She attended several country schools and later received her GED in 1991 from NIACC.
She was raised on the family farm with her parents and sister. She then worked for Trowbridge Super Market as a clerk and later as a cashier for five years, then she worked for the ASCS office for two years.
She met her future husband at a dance and later was united in marriage to Harry J. Westergard on February 17, 1952 at St. John church. To this union were born three children.
