Ronald Frank Turner was born in Lake City, Iowa on May 11, 1947, to Albert "Pete" and Arabelle (Krueger) Turner. Ron graduated from Lake City High School in 1965, received a BA in history from the University of Northern Iowa in 1969 and a Master's Degree in 1984. While an undergraduate at UNI, he was a member of the UNI varsity golf team earning an NCAA Regional Championship gold medal.
Ron was drafted into the United States Army in 1969, stationed out of Fort Ord, California during the Vietnam War. Ron was married to Teresa "Teri" Carlo Turner December 20, 1969. The couple has five children, Mike (Laura) Liberty, Missouri; Chad (Heather) Cedar Falls; Pat, Libertyville, Illinois; Ryan (Yvonne), Overland Park, Kansas; and Kelli, Denver, Colorado.
Ron was an avid railfan. He could frequently be found along the railroad tracks or in railyards around the country watching as trains passed by snapping photos of his favorite cars.
He was an accomplished golfer, spending his summer days golfing at the Country Club outside of Charles City. During his life, he had a Hole-in-One and won, or placed, in many golf events, including multiple wins and placements in the Charles City-City Tournament, and too many others to list.
Ron loved teaching history, geography, psychology & sociology at the Charles City Junior and Senior High Schools for 36 years. He also taught courses for North Iowa Area Community College for several years. One of his favorite memories of teaching was having each of his own kids in at least one class.
Ron coached for over 40 years. He was head boys golf coach, leading several state qualifying golf teams and had teams that set school records for low scores. He was also Sophomore and Freshman boys basketball coach and Assistant Varsity boys basketball coach. He took a lot of pride in helping his student athletes achieve different levels of success.
In addition to coaching, he also led and assisted with many basketball camps in Charles City and surrounding communities. During his career in education, he served as a mentor to countless students and fellow teachers, something he took pride in and saw benefits and rewards long after his retirement. Ron had many passions, but his biggest were his children, whom he was very proud of, and the many students he taught over the years, some of whom became colleagues and close family friends.
Ron was also involved with the Charles City Historic Preservation (Chairman at the time of his passing), Floyd County Museum, State of Iowa Historical Society, Iowa State Golf Association, Iowa Basketball Coaches Association, Charles City Education Association, National Education Association, University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association, Elks Club of Charles City, and the American Legion
Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Teri of Charles City; five children; six grandchildren: Rylie and Chayce Turner, of Liberty, Missouri, Jade and Jarrett Turner of Libertyville, Illinois, Chris James and Kaiden Turner of Overland Park, Kansas; his mother, Arabelle Turner (Dave Simmons) of Texas; a brother, Dennis Turner of Fairmont, Minnesota; a sister, Jan Turner of Kansas City, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents; and his father, Pete.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made out to the Floyd County Historical Museum or the Charles City High School Athletic Department.
