Gladys Lucile Backer Blunt, 91, of Charles City, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Jeanne Fullard, where she had resided for the past eight weeks.

A funeral service for Gladys Blunt will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City at a later date.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2014, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Gladys was born September 22, 1923, in rural Butler County to John and Augusta (Wiedenbeck)-(DeBower) Backer, the seventh of eight children. She attended Butler County, Dayton Township schools. On June 4, 1944, Gladys was married to Melvin Blunt in the parsonage of St John Evangelical Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with a daughter, Jeanne Ann.

Gladys was a homemaker her entire life and was well known for being an excellent cook and baked the best pies and cookies of anyone around. She enjoyed making goodies for her family. Gladys played an active role in raising two granddaughters and has provided many memories to her entire family.

Gladys had one daughter, but was very pleased to be "Aunt Gladys" to 60 nieces and nephews and countless great and great-great nieces and nephews. Gladys was God Mother to nephews, Mark Backer and Dennis Backer, great niece, Robin Taylor Morton and her cousin, Carl DeBower's son, LeRoy DeBower.

Gladys was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church for 70 years and was a past member of the Ladies Aid Circle. Gladys was an Assistant Girl Scout Leader in the 60's. During her lifetime, Gladys enjoyed walking, playing horse shoes, cribbage and doing the crossword puzzle in the paper daily.

Living family members include her daughter, Jeanne (Pete) Fullard; two granddaughters: Nicole (Kylle) Phend, Melanie (Ben) Sisson; four great grandchildren: Anastasia Parsons, Nathaniel Baltes, Henry Sisson and Nyla Lucile Sisson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Augusta Backer; two sisters: Grace and Betty; five brothers: Harry, Augie, John, Bill and Don; a granddaughter, Felisha; and her husband, Melvin.
