CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Robert “Bob” Vest, 87, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 5, 2014, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease and liver cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Hauser Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hauserfh.com.

Robert "Bob" Vest, 87, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 5, 2014 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease and liver cancer.

Funeral services for Bob Vest will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2014 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014 and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Robert Lee Vest, the son of John and Blanche (Evans) Vest, was born March 7, 1927 in Eldora, Iowa. He attended school and graduated from high school in Union, Iowa. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army in Europe from 1945-1947 and in Korea from 1950-1951.

He was united in marriage to Lola Brown on August 6, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center, Iowa where they made their home. Bob was sent to serve in Korea one month after their marriage, but Lola waited for his return and they began raising their family in Marshalltown. He worked for BOS Lines in Marshalltown from 1956-1968 and was transferred to Charles City in 1962. In 1968, Bob began working for Takin Bros. and in 1982 he worked for H & W until his retirement in 1986.

Bob was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was involved with delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a life member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, Charles City Bowling Association, Wigwam & Wagon Camping Club, Teamster Union and the Heritage Club. Bob loved sports of any kind, except for golf, whether he was participating or watching. He really enjoyed pitching horseshoes.

Living family members include his wife of 64 years, Lola of Charles City; children: Michael (Angie) Vest of Indianola, Kevin Vest of Bayard, New Mexico and Lori (Jeff) Shook of Tripoli; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Neil; and four brothers: John, Jr., Frank, LaVerne and Lyle.
