CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Lavern Arthur Aringdale, 82, of Charles City died on Monday, July 28, 2014, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com .

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. with a one-hour prior visitation on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City. The Reverend Dennis Niezwaag and The Reverend Kent A. Mchler will be officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date.

Lavern was born on November 6, 1931, in Canova, South Dakota, to Harold and Freda Aringdale. He graduated from Lehigh High School. In his younger years Lavern worked for his father who owned several telephone companies. He later worked at Rath Package Plant in Waterloo, then moved to Charles City in 1957 and went to Linotype School in Charles City where he met the love of his life, Sharon.

On June 28, 1958, they were united in marriage at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. They shared 56 years together. Lavern also worked at Sieg Co. and Garry Home furniture. He spent most of his life working for the Charles City Post Office and after 32 years retired in 1996.

In his free time, Lavern loved going on vacations with family and friends. His favorite places he vacationed were Cancun, Maui and Oahu. He loved the warm weather and beautiful water. Lavern was an Iowa Hawkeye fan.

When Lavern’s two children were growing up he coached Bob’s Little League team. He attended all of Bob and Shari’s baseball, softball, and basketball games. He also went to Shari’s bowling tournaments. Lavern took the kids camping and had many fun times with them and friends.

Lavern was an outdoors person. He mowed the lawn more than once a day on occasion. Lavern liked growing roses and other flowers. He kept the outside of his home nice by putting up Christmas decorations for all the kids to see when he lived in Maple Heights.

After retirement Lavern enjoyed fishing and bought a cottage and fishing boat in Ventura Heights. He would go fishing with many friends and family. A memorable trip in Lavern’s life was snagging five large spoonbill catfish in South Dakota. Lavern met up with friends and the retirees from the Post Office for coffee quite often.

More than anything, Lavern loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a good father, husband, and grandpa. He will be sadly missed by those who love and knew him.

The family of Lavern would like to say a special “Thank You” to the Good Shepherd Staff in Mason City for all the love and care he received for the past 8 years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Sharon Aringdale; children, Shari (Mike) Dunn of Mason City and Robert (Laura) Aringdale of Charles City; sister, Julia McGee of Orange City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Becki (Ed) Kielsmeier of Charles City and Agnes Aringdale; grandchildren, Shara (John) Klesath of Nora Springs, Emily Klatt of Irving, Texas, and Tyler Klatt of Charles City; and great-grandchildren, John Maxwell Klesath and Sophia Ann Klesath.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Freda Aringdale; stepmother, Margaret Aringdale; brothers, Harold Duane Aringdale and Cecil Aringdale in infancy; and sister, Janice Schmillen.
